From 1906  we have an innocent (by today’s standards) short story about a boy in a summertime boy’s world getting himself into so much trouble that even Lassie can’t save him. He has to save himself! See how easily you could rewrite or re-read this to imagine it’s a life and death situation in the post apocalyptic world. Hint: Substitute hungry flesh eating crazed villains for the boys of summer. The hero happy to have outwitted the bad guys finds that he has only dug a deeper hole. Or pile of hay.
